Luxury Tax

The NBA utilizes a soft salary cap system in order to give teams strapped for cash a way to improve their squads. It does have limits, however. 

Bird Rights

Teams that employ a player for more than one season own the rights to that player, gving them an advanatge in contract negotiations.
